Here is the lighting and rendering test for my "Stole from my Kin" animation. I took a break from the animation itself and worked on the environment and characters instead. Had fun working on them.

I'm still left with a few tweaks in terms of looks, but in terms of animation, I've got lots of changes to make! Hope to be able to complete it soon and show it to you!

How to Transfer UVs in Maya

Hello,

If you're here to find out how to transfer UVs from a 3d geometry to another one, you are the right place! ;)
Here's a little tutorial on how to transfer UVs using "transfer attributes"

1. Select the geometry with the good UVs.

2. Add the target geometry to selection.
(Ctrl + Shift + Left Click on target geometry)

3. Under Polygons > Mesh > Transfer Attributes (option box) > Attribute Settings, choose your sample space
(if you haven't freezed transformations, you can try Local, if your reference geometry is in the same world space as your target, use World)

4. Click transfer!

5. Delete the History of target geometry to "lock in" those UVs.

6. Now you can delete the reference mesh.
(You may one to back up your file before doing so)

7. Congratulations! You're done!

Issues with Rigs:
Recently, I used an existing rig to work on some animation.
After I'm done with the animation, I needed to decorate and beautify my characters and scene.
I decided to do a quick and fast one by applying some textures to "cloth" them.
However, their UVs are all in a mess!

Problem A:
So I went on to duplicate the model, unwrapped it, texture it and thought of transfering the UVs back to the binded geometry so that I can apply the new textures to the rig.
However, a problem arised with existing deformers [the existing skinCluster because the geometry has been binded to the rig]
What this causes is that the binded geometry has a history where it has to constantly calculating the transferAttributes node after it has calculated the skinCluster node. This causes the rig to become very laggy and unable to feedback smoothly when posing the character.

Why don't we just delete the history of the transferAttributes node like before?
The transferAttributes node is a deformer history. Maya has only two ways of deleting history - (1) Delete History (2) Delete Non-Deformer history.
Using (1), the skinCluster node will be gone and the rig won't work anymore!
Using (2), nothing gets deleted because both are deformer nodes. Problem unsolved.

Maya doesn't seem to allow us to choose which deformer history to delete, or at least from what I have realised after battling with it for some time.
Maybe they can considering allowing this because comes in really handy when troubleshooting.

Anyway, here are two solutions:

Solution A:
1. Open the "List of input operations for geometry"
(Inputs to the selected object [the green box with a right red arrow located near the top right hand corner of screen] > All inputs...)

2. Middle click and drag the transferAttributes node below the skinCluster node.
(Or move the skinCluster node above the transferAttributes node, whichever does the job)

Result A:
Viola! Now, Maya will only have to calculate the transferAttribute nodes once!
And you can pose the model smoothly!

Problem B:
Just when I thought I had solved the problem. I went on to try to touch up my animation and realised that another problem popped out.
Whenever Maya goes to another frame in the animation, it will still recalculate the transferAttributes node!! Argh!
The playback was extremely laggy and it was impossible to animate!

Solution B:
I thought of a work around where I reference the old rig instead in order to continue my animation.
When I'm just about to render my work, then I'll reference the textured rig.
However, this is not intuitive and likely to cause bugs because we keep swapping references.

So I came up another work-around, not that it's much more intuitive, but it kinda helps..

Create a shelf button or assign a shortcut for this toggle MEL script:

if (`getAttr character:transferAttributes1.nodeState` != 0)
{
setAttr "character:transferAttributes1.nodeState" 0;
}

else
{
setAttr "character:transferAttributes1.nodeState" 1;
}

Result B:
This toggles on and off the transferAttributes node from "Normal" to "Has No Effect"
This solution is working very well for me and I can check my animation with the animation textures when I really need to, and turn it off when I need my scene to playback smoothly.

If anybody has any other way to solve this issue, please let us know!
Cheers! I hope this has been helpful!

Transcript:
Voice One: "You stole from my kin!"
Voice Two: "Who was fixin' to betray us."
Voice One: "You didn't know that at the time!"
Voice Two: "So I borrowed it till I did know!"
Voice One: "That don't make no sense!"

I've been having fun with this little animation during my free time.
The dialog, if I'm not wrong, is from the 11 Second Club January 2010 Competition.
Here's the latest playblast. =)
I'm going to work on the facial animation soon and lip sync will come last.

Please critic, it really helps me improve! Thanks!

Three Components of Communication

7% ----- Oral (What we say, the words we use)
38% ---- Vocal (How we say, the tone we use)
55% ---- Visual (Body language, Facial Expression)

"Visual" is where character animation plays a big part! :D

For character animation, this can be a useful list of the possible meanings of body language:

BODY LANGUAGE
Rubbing chin
Body not facing the other person
Fiddling with pens, keys etc
Finger pointing
Hands in pockets
Scratching head/neck
Looking at the other person when speaking
Frowning
Looking around the place
Slouching
Eyes looking up when talking
Eyes looking down when talking
MEANING
Uncertainty, deciding, considering
Not interested
Nervous
Angry, accusing, authority
Depressed, insecure, feeling cold
Confused, puzzled, frustrated
Focused, attentive
Confused, disagree, unhappy
Not interested, bored, distracted
Not interested
Recalling, thinking
Thinking of a reason, likely an excuse

Hmm, if I have time, I intend to grow this list because it can come in useful when deciding on acting choices! :D

Excel in Customer Service

I attended a course about customer service excellence recently. This is not exactly a CG related article but I thought it might be useful to some. =) So, I'm here to share...

When dealing with challenging customers, first, Deal with your feelings.
We need to understand that we cannot control others' behaviour but we can always control ours. It's very common that we can get very irritated by our customers however we must not show it because it won't help the situation.

Listen to what they have to say, our customers want to be heard. Allow them to relay their concerns thoroughly without interruption and maintain eye contact through the process.

Empathise with your customer. We do not necessarily have to agree with their claims but we have to accept it and help them from there.

Clarify what problems the customer has faced and what they want eventually. Ask appropriate questions to get more information in order to help them.

It's time to Take action and before that, you have to be sure of policies and limitations of what solutions you (in your position) can offer. If it's beyond you, suggest alternatives or refer the customer to the proper authority, or else, try to agree on a solution and work on it.

If it's required that you Refer them to the proper authority, maintain the responsibility for solving the problem. Follow up with customers until their problem is solved.

Cheers!

Kyle Balda's 3D Animation Masterclass

Useful tips on how to approach a 3D character animation dialog shot (above)

I am working on a super short animation right now. It's a 2 person dialog.
I felt slightly lost in terms of my workflow and hence I went to flip through notes from Gobelin's Summer School! In particular, Kyle Balda's lessons is really helpful! Not only do I now have a clearer mind on how to approach my shot, I am totally inspired now! :D

Do take precious notes when attending masterclasses or courses! They are really useful!
Alright, I'm off to animate!

Oh, I found this clip of a demo he did for June 2009 issue of 3D World Magazine. This 10 minutes clip is a summary! :) Enjoy!

Pixar: 20 Years of Animation in Singapore

Hey there! :D

I've been to the Pixar: 20 Years of Animation recently!!
I went with a few of my friends, who are by no means related to the animation industry, in order to enjoy the exhibition in the perspective of the "general public" I'm actually surprised by their interest and curiosity.

Upon entering the exhibition hall, we were first greeted with the timeline of Pixar's feature films and awards. I took time to read the snippets of texts on the walls. I'm once again reminded that it's the same few geniuses behind all the fantastic filmography and technology we see today, namely George Lucas, John Lasseter, Ed Catmull and Steve Jobs.

I see that Pixar has this unspoken philosophy of making a technological breakthrough in every film. Like CG Fur in Monster, CG Water in Finding Nemo etc.

There were many Wonderful sculptures and character studies at the exhibition some of which I think are totally bizzare! :P One of my favourite exhibits is the Toy Story Zoetrope! It really feels as if all the toys came alive!

Overall, the exhibition could do with more animation. My friends say they like to see things move! Well, I guess it's more like a museum this time round.

I can see that Pixar has achieved a lot in the past two decades and will definitely crave to see more touching animated features from them. Keep up the good work Pixar!

By Hook or by Crook

Hello!

Sometimes when working on projects and schedule is tight we have to adopt this approach. So I quickly whipped up this design to set as a wallpaper to remind myself.

Sometimes, so long as the result looks good, it doesn't matter how we get to it. Meaning we should often try to save time by "cheating" during the compositing stage - not everything has to be strictly a real 3D element rendered from the software package. Well, I like to think of it more like working smart! =)

NYP SIDM Fusion X 2010

NYP SIDM Fusion X 2010!

I visited the annual NYP SIDM Graduation Show, Fusion, a few weeks ago.
And I loved the atmosphere!

Fusion, to me, is a celebration and recognition for all the hard work students have put in through their course of study.
I'm glad that the graduates are proud and happy to be showing their work! :)

I saw some works with super potential in visual effects, character animation and not forgetting motion graphics. Mandl and Rifyal has good character animation to showcase, as well as Nigel and Marcus Lee in terms of concept art and illustrations.
It's the first batch of graduates for the Motion Graphics and Broadcast Design (MGBD) and I was looking forward to see their works.

It was great training to have industrial projects as their assignments for the MGBD graduates.
I had the opportunity to have a chat with some of the MGBD graduates, in particular, the Anomalyst - Jed, Chad, Mus and Ben.

They have a strong portfolio of industrial standard.
I really like their drive and motivation towards their creations and reaching out to clients with their works.
There is a lot of potential in this 4-man collaboration and I believe they will go far as they continue to stick to their goals.

NYP SIDM Visit

I went back to Nanyang Polytechnic a few weeks ago.

Visited my juniors who are currently preparing for their Fusion Graduation Show 2010. It's really heartening to see them doing well.

I had the chance to watch a few of the Final Year Projects that they have produced and I was impressed by them. Overall, the renderings has significantly improved.

I will like to specially mention An Jun and Ling Yang's team because I personally feel that they have successfully created a short film that is slightly long in duration but entertaining throughout. The best part is that I was told they had proper planning so they managed to finish the production phase of the whole short film in 2 weeks!

Congratulations!
See you guys at Fusion 2010 - X Factor Unearthed!

For of you may be curious why this sudden change, my blog service provider has announced that it's FTP Publishing will no longer be supported after 1 May, 2010. Therefore, I migrated my blog over to this subdomain. In my opinion, Blogger has done well in easing the migration process by providing a FTP Migration Tool.

With this, I'm sure I'll have to make more changes to this website over the next month to ensure everything works smoothly.

Thank you for updating your feeds and bookmarks!

Planning for Animation Sequence

This is the planning for a secret animation sequence. It's an easter egg on this website. ;P
It's done sometime ago already and I thought I'll just upload the thumbnail stage here. Cheers! :D

3D Basic Bird in Maya

This is a long outdated video which I prepared almost 2 years ago.
It's not fully meant to be a tutorial hence the fast foward, but it'll be great if anyone finds this useful :P

I was modelling a basic 3D bird in Maya for a short film production I did in school called Gan Cheong Kin (GCK) Season 3.

It's kept really basic because of the style of the film, but it can be brought futher for zbrushing or mudboxing. The model is available from the free downloads section

Have fun!
