Digiron Work In Progress 5
Testing the rig. I's quite challenging to tweak the cloth simulation, but I've to admit that it'sa lot of fun!
I'm currently doing up the facial controls for Digiron. He's largely animatable already. I just want pump up the rig a little bit more before I begin animating him into the shots.
I'm eating the schedule a little, especially the animation time but I'll be able to make it up. :D
Happy New Year once again!!

Digiron Work In Progress 4
Production Schedule

Rigging and Rendering Test

I came up with a production schedule for Digiron project to pace myself.
Progress is great, texturing turned out better than I expected.
Unwrapping is much of a breeze with Maya 2009's new unfolding.
No need for Roadkill.mel anymore as far as I observe.
So, I'm now in the rigging process for this character and I'm aiming for cloth simulation for him. We'll see how it goes. Mr Chris and Mr Sridhar kindly helped me with some technical issues with nCloth. :) If not for them, I'd be searching high and low for the parameters to increase the simulation solving samples :P
Alright, I'll try my best to stick to the schedule. Digiron's animation test in the next posts! Keep checking back!
Thanks for reading :) Happy New Year! Happy 2009 to all and myself!

3D Lighting and Compositing
Experimenting tracking, lighting and compositing 3D elements with live footage.
My first attempt at feature tracking, so we might spot some sliding in this footage.
Promise to do something more interesting :)

Digiron Work In Progress 3
Completed the majority of the modelling revamp of Digiron this morning!
I'll be working on the uwrapping and texturing and hopefully rigging tmr!

This afternoon, I worked on the style for Steampunk using Digiron as the subject.
The idea was to achieve the Street Fighter IV Game Trailer Style. It requires some maya fluids to make the mimic better! :D enjoy!

Eyeka Creative Challenge Winner at Siggraph Asia 2008
At the Autodesk Booth in the Exhibition Halls of Siggraph Asia 2008, I saw our Eyeka Creative Challenge Winning Entry!
I thought I was dreaming or something! It was screen on the big screen at the Autodesk Booth together with other NYP SIDM produced films.
I feel glad that this clip produced by Yong Yi, Zi Chao and myself has some small achievements all around. Hope to have more coming in!

Managed to take a photograph of it! :D

Hello everybody!
10 December
Pixar's Renderman Course
I was at the first ever Siggraph Asia Conference last week!
The whole of the first day of the conference was spent at NUS Singapore for the Pixar Renderman Course!
Before the conference, there were only 25 seats to the Pixar's Renderman Course which I was hoping to attend.
Made my way down early in the morning and managed to get the last couple of tickets to the Renderman Course by Prof Malcolm Kesson!
Marcus and I attended the course together and learnt valuable stuff! Lucky me!
The Renderman course covers the concept behind using Pixar's Renderman, such as RIB files, RIB archives and the Renderman Shading Language [RSL].
We even had the fun of writing our own custom shader! I must say Pixar's Renderman is really powerful, it has a huge library of procedural textures in SLIM.
And the best part, the SLIM parameters are all able to be brought into Maya to animate!
Understand that the current version of Renderman for Maya [RFM] still has some inadequacies, hence I'm waiting for the release of Renderman 2!

Digiron Work In Progress 2
Pushed his proportions for him to be taller.
I'll sketches of him for a while before I get into making the changes in 3D.
Meanwhile I'll plan the boards for my final animation.
Maybe it'll be short animations for the front and end of my demoreel. :)
We'll see how it goes, everything is not set yet but I've rough ideas in my mind yet to be trashed out.

Digiron Work In Progress 1
So for easier skinning and rigging, I gave him a sweater... his eyes are just a texture now, his ears are weird.. But these are not going to last for long! :D
Here's the current look..

Here's a list of things I want to improve on him:
1. Give him some eyebrows
2. Improve his hair
3. Overall proportions can be pushed
4. Give him a jacket [That's what I'm always wearing]
5. More definition in jeans
6. Nicer shoes
7. Improved fingers and nails
8. Textures
9. Oh my! There's currently no specular on the face!
10. Nicer eyeballs
11. His ears are now.. Uh~
SO! 11 things to tackle for now! ;)

Digiron
Hello all!
I started creating a 3D character [Digiron] who is supposed to resemble myself early last year.
At that point in time, I was not very confident with 3D, I was afraid of cloth.. rigging.. and other potentially technical stuff. As a result, I came up with a very easy, typical and quite ugly character design.
Now that I've become more familiar with how to go about creating a 3D character, I target to redesign and create a nice and appealing 3D caricature.
The current work in progress is the guy you see at the top right of the screen.
Yep, that's Digiron! I have some plans for some live footage compositing for Digiron, so we'll see! :)
I also just started a CGTalk thread to seek opinion from the creative industry gurus. Will be back soon, see ya!

Rainbow sets up $25m studio
I was reading about this in the papers this morning.
Here's a link to their popular franchise Winx Club
If I'm not wrong, Rainbow is the top animation studio in Italy!
Italian animation studio Rainbow is putting $25 million into a new gaming unit here in Singapore. And it is by far the biggest investment here!
This is gonna be so cool!
Looking forward to the vibe in the interactive digital media industry in a few years to come! :)

Research on Further Studies
Research on Further Studies
Hi all!
I am planning to get a degree after national service.
Therefore, I started a little bit of research on a few potential institutions.
Below are links to their wikipedias definition and websites.
Wikipedia
NTU's Schools of Art, Design & Media
California Institute of the Arts
Academy of Art University
Savannah College of Art and Design
Art Center College of Design
Official Website
NTU's Schools of Art, Design & Media
California Institute of the Arts
Academy of Art University
Savannah College of Art and Design
Art Center College of Design
I will be doing an in-depth research and comparison between all these colleges to find a suitable institution and course.
In the meantime, I will concentrate on my studies and creative work :)
It'll be great if any of you guys, probably from CGSociety or CGTalk, or probably from any art institution can give me some tips and advice on my choices.
Drop me an email! Thanks in advance!
By the way, I'm now working on MTV + ME Competition which I embarked on a couple of days ago.
The concept, design, boards and timing reel is out.
Hope to update progress here but things are kind of tight here in school, so this weekend probably. :)
laters :)

Eyeka Creative Challenge Winner
Channel Box
Ronald, Yong Yi and Zi Chao
We have put a lot of effort into this Eyeka Asia Creative Challenge and we are very excited about it!
Just a couple of days ago, the winner of Eyeka Asia Creative Challenge is announced! It's us, Channel Box!!
We are so so happy!! :D
I'll like to thank Ms Grace, Mr Jacques D and my two buddies Yong Yi and Zi Chao for making this possible! Thank you guys!
Can't wait to show you guys what we've been up to so here goes! Hope you'll like it!
Please watch in high quality :D

Our objective was to create an engaging animation that will inform the audience about the pronounciation of eyeka.
Simple visual elements are used for audience to relate better. For instance, the mouth literally provides a visual demonstration of the pronounciation of 'Eyeka'. Therefore, the concept allows the audience to register the correct pronounciation of Eyeka without much complexity.

Chasseur de Dragon is now on the big screens in Singapore!
I remember Yong Yi and I hunting all over Paris for the art book for this film! Didn't manage to find it in the end, such a disappointment.
In any case, our master Mr Kyle Balda is the animation director for this film! It's gotta awesome. Gonna catch it very soon! :D

Aardman Retrospective
Aardman Retrospective
Tuesday 28th Octover 2008
Nanyang Polytechnic Theatre for the Arts
David Sproxton and Luis Cook from Aardman, the home of Wallace and Gromit, had a discussion session after the screening of some of Aardman's works.
The question and answer question was really interesting, so I thought I'll jot some of them down here. I cannot remember everything, word for word or every figure, but I guess the idea is somewhat like that, may not be too accurate :)
Q: Do you have life at Aardman?
A: In the past we used to work day in and out, now with advancement of technology, we adopt a 5 day work week. So we have time for ourselves during the weekends.
Q: How do you find your animators?
A: Source from institutes and we have portfolios and resumés coming in. From there, they are trained to be stop frame animators or 3D animators. It's interesting how stop frame animators can convert to 3D animators much easier than the other way round.
Q: How many animators do you have?
A: All the times, it depends on the scale of a project. The size of the team grows and shrinks based on the projects. For feature film length projects, the number of animators can go up to 40, whereas for short films or commercials, there coould probably be 5 to 8 animators.
Find out more about Aardman!
Overall, I found the talk really beneficial. I love The Pearce Sisters and a commercial (I forgot the title) which interviewed different creatures "Why will you do when you fear?" there were two comical cockroaches inside hilarious! And the Mcvities one too. They have really interesting concepts and execution here and there. Awesome!

Photography
Hello everybody!
It has been two and a half years since I began my journey through is course.
I've tried many different forms of art, most of which was digital art, though I still love to paint and colour with poster and colour pencils.
There is a new medium I never attempted before - photography.
Recently, I've been really into 3D shading and lighting. I know photography will benefit me in terms of composition, tonal, depth and lighting, and it is also a quick medium to achieve nice results.
Quick as it is, I feel that it really takes effort to learn to do it right. As to how long it takes to learn photography, I guess it's up to talent.
Currently, I have no idea what photography is all about. Therefore in these last 6 months of my course of study in Digital Media Design, I'm taking the digital photography module by my lecturer, James Lee. Really eager to learn a lot of photography stuff.
The first excercise is to take 3 photos of different aperture, take 3 photos of different shutter speed, take 3 photos of different ISO.. to show the use of each function. It's due on Wednesday and I've got none of them done.. Hmm.. How should I go about doing this?
Anyways, I'll be keeping a log of my photography journey here. A new catergory!
To begin with, I'll start with a photo I took. I chose to pick this as the first because James said it was not too bad of my amateur photos~ Hahaha!
Okay, here goes!

Mini Cooper S 2007 Work In Progress 4
I can't get the machines in school to render over the weekend, hence I only have 10 frames of the turntable that friday evening...
But I do have every render pass for those frames so I composited them just now..
Next up, I'll have to optimise the final gather points desity and interpolation because I'll be using rebuild off like Mr Frety and mrbond from CGTalk suggested and there's fg flickering using the current settings..
After which, I think I'll lower the reflection in the ground slightly and blur it a little more.. and cover up some visible holes in the car! :P
Model the interior? Hmm.. shall see :)

CG Contest 3 Work In Progress 3
Some changes to make :D
Poster falling off when he bangs the counter.
Overlap his turn when he says "we don't need no badges".
Overlap in eyebrow to not make him so rigid in the last flare.
CG Contest 3 Animation organised by my lecturer, Mr Frety.
Updates from Work In Progress 2:
Refined lip sync.
Added facial animation.
Changed background to avoid misunderstanding.
Added in the overlaps for most of the actions.
My Story:
Most wanted fugitive trying to get pass the customs with a bad police disguise. The custom officers asks him for the police badges.

Mini Cooper S 2007 Work In Progress 3
In this composition, following Mr Frety's advice, I added the radial specular to separate the car from the background. And it works!
But! I did this in post which is not what I intended.
I will do it in 3D next. Hee hee!
I switched to the mental ray car paint shader instead of the layered shader. It really works better too!
Added falloff the the light and reflection planes and the reflection looks like what I wanted to achieve already! Yay!

Rigging and Animation Research
Well, I have plans to rig and animate the MINI Cooper S I'm working on now.
Mr Frety kindly introduced me to the mental ray car paint phen shader for my MINI instead of the layered shader I'm using now.
I will try that out tomorrow :)
Meanwhile, I looked up on some videos of the MINI C S in action to observe the movement.

Single Leg Rig and Animation Test
Quickly modelled, rigged and animated this leg.
The objective of this exercise was to research on how to rig a animator-friendly leg.
I was inspired by the character setups Mr Kyle Balda used for some of his animation demonstration in class. :)

Mini Cooper S 2007 Work In Progress 2
I looked up some tutorials on how to make a car paint shader.
My friends, Bogard and Jason, gave me the idea to have a layered shader for my car paint. I spent quite some time connecting shading nodes all over and...
I'm very happy with the look currently. Plenty more shaders to design and textures to create. Will be back soon!
In the meantime, here are 2 test renders:

Mini Cooper S 2007 Work In Progress
Hello! My progress of the Mini Cooper S 2007 within the past few days.
I started this project a year ago hoping to decorate it with many cute soft shell turtles. I got all too busy with studies and I revived this project a few days ago and here's my progress.

Modelled the MINI badge and did a test render of it.
It needs a slight tweak to the raytracing samples.

I'm almost done with modelling this car and I really like the result. Hope to post the final model here soon! :D

Channel Box
3 Good Friends
I had this idea in my mind about a month ago to get together a couple of my good friends and work on CG projects together where we are in total control of the whole process.
This urge became especially strong after I went to Gobelins, Paris and realise that there is a serious lack of creativity, adventure and boldness in the CG content created in Singapore.
Hoping to bring up this daring-arty-culture in Singapore....................
Yong Yi, Zi Chao and I came together to form Channel Box.
The main objective of Channel Box is to experiment CG content creation wildly in search for style.
Through this process, not only do we have a channel to put our skills to practice and showcase, we can also learn to work together efficiently and brainstorm te wildest ideas.
Ideally, we will be able to create and recognise our own style and have all these creative input evolve to an identity!

GCK Season 3 The Toilet Episode
My Final Year Project Presentation went very well last Thursday.
However, that was not the end of the production. There were still more effects to be done and composited in while some of the passes requires rendering. Other than these, it's more or less close to completion.
I will be planning a 10-day schedule and work tightly on wrapping up this production because I belieave that dragging this production on will only make things worse.
In the meantime, I will concentrate of completing numerous personal projects too.

Kyle Balda's Masterclass
Hi!
Mr Kyle Balda, an experienced animator who has worked on animated features at Pixar and ILM was in Singapore for the past week. During this time, he conducted an acting and animation workshop at NYP-SIDM. Some of my friends and I recently attended his masterclass at Gobelins in Paris just before this Singapore session, and we flew back to Singapore for his masterclass in Singapore. Despite that, I still learnt a great deal this second session!
Today is the last day of his workshops and I took the opportunity to clarify all my doubts on animation. Just to summarize, he is very generous, pleasant and patient when sharing his tips and tricks, and the best part is, he makes his animation techniques very easy to absorb and digest. For me, it's only after his masterclass that I know what is character animation (physicality vs acting & performance).
As with everything that I learnt, I will continuously put to use his teachings into my animation so that I will keep improving and I will not forget. I have a good chance to practice my character animation now because I am working on a short film production for the school right now and it's in its animation phase! Great! I really appreciate everything he taught us.
Had a photo-taking session at the end of the masterclass and hopefully I'd be able to get my hands on the photographs and I'll post them here. :D
I will be working on character animation tomorrow!

GOBELINS Summer school 2008 in Paris
GOBELINS Summer school 2008 in Paris
Character Animation
From June 30th to July 11th, 2008
Find out more
Hello guys, I believe this will be my last post in Singapore before leaving for Paris to attend the Gobelins Summer School 2008!!
I'm very excited to meet people from all over the world with the common interest of animation, be it the lecturers, guest lecturers, or the other students attending this summer school. I'm even more thrilled to meet the students of Les Gobelins and to see their amazing work and how they work to achieve the result.
Given the numerous attractions in Paris, I believe this will be a very enriching trip in terms of exploring their art, culture, architecture, history and of course animation! :D
Now, I've got to do some preparation for the trip. I'll be back in Singapore a couple of weeks later! See you!

Shawn Kelly's Animation Tips and Tricks
Hi guys, I jumping around the CG Sites and ended up at Shawn Kelly's Animation Tips and Tricks blog. After reading a few recent entries, I found this entry to be very useful for an animator. I believe it will kind of help if us when we are animating so that we don't get lost during the process. Nice tip, I might have it printed out and pin it up at my work station. :)

On 30 June at Hortpark. My team and I won the Judges' Choice Award category! The prize was some cash and more importantly an internship at Infinite Frameworks! :D Hopefully I will be able to go for the internship. There are some issues because I have had my attachment programme already. Probably somethings can be worked out to schedule the internship after graduation :)

Post Attachment
Well, other than being a post attachment entry,
it's literally about my attachment at VHQ POST.
The Industrial Attachment Programme is over and I have learnt a great deal. This entry can help me summarize it all.
Firstly, I will like to thank everybody at VHQ Post. Especially the people from the 3D Department, I seriously hope I had more time and chances to work with them.
I have improved a lot in the technical aspect of course, for example, Diana taught me some tips and tricks to "transfer" the animation of a geometry on a higher res geometry which can be useful in terms of doing cloth simulations in low res and then up res later. I have been using MEL in bits and pieces to do great 3D in Maya, we have a few lecturers in SIDM who are really capable of using the language. Back at VHQ, we have Ashish our technical director who seemingly uses his keyboard more than his mouse in maya! Ok, it's an exaggertation but it's true to an extent, even his animation is scripted! I also did some serious lighting and rendering. OVerall, my productivity in 3D has definately gone up.
There are many departments at VHQ, hence I will walk around to see how a productions actually works and get together. Out of curiousity, I kept asking questions to find out how their pipeline works in order to deliver great results within schedule. Definately, it required good planning to achieve that, hence they have a robust team of producers who fight for time and quality at the same time, such that every process in the production is given adequate time to complete.
To me, it was such a great experience working at VHQ Post. Now, I am applying what I have learnt to my Final Year Project! :)

Gobelins Summer School 2008 Character Animation
Hello everybody!
My previous post was 2 months ago!
Sorry about that.
Other than being busy with important freelance work, I've been on Industrial Attachment Programme for the past 3 months and I've really learnt a great deal. I'll write a more detailed post in the days to come.
Meanwhile, I'm also selected to go for the Gobelins Summer School 2008 Character Animation which is held in Paris, France. I am very excited about the trip because I can get to see and learn many things which I cannot learn here in Singapore. I hope to back valuable knowledge to share with my fellow coursemates.
That's all for now! :)

Demo Reel 2007
Hi all,
I uploaded my first demo reel on to YouTube earlier today.
It's called Demo Reel 2007.
Why 2007?
Actually, it consists of work in early 2008 too. I categorized everything under 2007 first to get things started, so that I won't have a Demo Reel 2008 so early in the year. So please don't get too confused. Anyway, more animation reels are up, have a look :)

Mong

Hi everybody!
I'm working on this character, his name is Mong.
His bones and limbs are meant to disjoint every now and then making him a funny and lovable 3D character.
I will model, texture and rig him until he becomes a complete 3D character rig and hopefully make it to my animation show reels!
Do check back for updates! :D
